This CPD session is designed to enable teachers and learning support to facilitate highly engaging and motivating lesson openings. The session is interactive, rooted in educational theory, and contains video/collaborative resources to encourage staff participation. Participants learn to: - Understand the key features of meaningful engaged learning; - Identify and analyse these features in video examples of lesson starters; - Discuss/evaluate these concepts with regards to their own practices/settings; - Design, plan, and implement their own engaging lesson starters, using the provided handy prompts and planning materials; Provided in this pack is: - Visually-engaging presentation with embedded videos. - Engaging Starters checklist; - Planning sheet for engaging starters; -Teacher/Trainer guidance. This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of William Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing.' Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS3 expectations within the new National Curriculum framework. Children have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text. Activities within the booklet include: - 'Context: Life in Shakespeare's Times' - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: 'Know the purpose, audience and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension.' - 'Shakespeare's Description' - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: 'Know how language, including figurative language, vocabulary choice, grammar, text structure and organisational features, present meaning.' - 'Hero' - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: 'Study setting, plot, and characterisation, and the effects of these.' - 'Vocabulary Inspector' - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: 'Learn new vocabulary, relating it explicitly to known vocabulary and understanding it with the help of context and dictionaries.' These resources enable students to develop their skill in using two of the more difficult to master punctuation marks: apostrophes and inverted commas. Students learn through clarifying what the punctuation marks represent, understanding how they add meaning to sentences, and evaluating their use in the writing of others. The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to: - Define what apostrophes and inverted commas are; - Learn rules for when they should be used, and how to use them in more complex grammatical situations; - Identify apostrophes and inverted commas being used correctly and incorrectly in writing; - Analyse and evaluate what it is that makes the use of apostrophes and inverted commas more logical and effective in some situations than others; - Write an advice leaflet for other students about how to use these punctuation forms, modelling correct use themselves; -Peer/self-assess learning attempts. The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. This engaging and informative lesson enables students to understand the language features used by Michael Morpurgo to depict the horrors of war in War Horse. In particular, students analyse the effectiveness of his similes, metaphors and personification (amongst other devices) before creating their own descriptive device-filled writing about going ‘over the top!’ The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Defining and exemplifying range of different descriptive techniques; Identifying the descriptive language techniques in use in an extract from War Horse (chapter 8, in which Joey and the cavalry charge over no man’s land towards the enemy); Analysing the effectiveness of Morpurgo’s descriptive language, considering the effect on the reader; Creating their own first person descriptive passages about going ‘over the top’, using each of the descriptive language devices effectively; Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts; Included is: Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; Cards for the card-sorting activity; Descriptive language structure strip; Extract from War Horse; Writing to describe helpsheet; Comprehensive lesson plan. There are also opportunities for group learning, speaking and listening, peer assessment, and whole class discussion. I originally used these resources with year 7 and 8 classes, however colleagues have used them for between years 4 and 9 with minimal adaptations.
